The US Army Corps of Engineers has finished dismantling the SM-1 nuclear power plant at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The plant was the Army's first nuclear reactor and the first to send nuclear-generated electricity into the commercial power grid. The project is now complete after the last field work was finished this year.

Why it matters

The dismantling of the SM-1 nuclear power plant is significant as it marks the end of an era for the US Army's nuclear program and highlights the Army's efforts to decommission and clean up legacy nuclear facilities.
